Election night has been interesting and painful. As a small business owner and an ethnic minority in the United States, I have always appreciated that I have had numerous freedoms; the freedom to start a business, to vote and to speak my mind to name a few. There has always been a movement of progression in the US from desegregation of education, the rights of women to choose what is right for their own bodies and most recently the sanctity of marriage for all citizens of our country.
But tonight, I feel broken and handcuffed. I feel that we, as a country and a world power, have taken a huge step backward. While, the looming prospect that Donald Trump may win the presidency, I cannot fathom how this is the right choice.
Let’s be honest, I understand that Hillary Clinton may not be the favored choice, and her email discretion aside, which the FBI absolved her of any wrongdoing, is minimal compared to the insane accusations that Donald Trump has been slapped with. I am not sure how we could elect some who has been accused of systemic racism, sexual assault, fraud and most recently child molestation; not to mention the insane ideas of deporting more than 10 million Muslims and a building a wall with our southern neighbor, Mexico.
I am so heartbroken. We are a divided country at a time that we need to be united. We have had an extremely prosperous eight years under Barack Obama and now we are trying to undermine that entire progress we have made.
Are we losing faith in our political system? Is our country so broken that we are going to elect an egomaniac and textbook narcissist? For all of those of you who voted for Trump, congratulations, you have made the United States a hateful, xenophobic society that will take years or decades to recover from. We open ourselves up to more acts of terrorism; foreign and domestic.
Now we, as a country and society, will have to be that much more vigilant. We are going to be an even bigger target. If Trump is to win, his xenophobic tendencies will potentially destroy the fragile global peace that we currently have. Yes, I understand that there are current threats to our way of life like ISIS, Al Qaeda and the Hamas, but now we may potentially add Mexico, China and current security allies; Japan, Korea and Turkey among others.
We have started down a path that we have to deal with at least the next 4 years. Be careful, America. I still love you, but we have a lot of making up to do.
