We Millennials sure do cause a stir don’t we? I mean just take one look at your Facebook feed and the one thing all the other generations seem to agree on is that we are just whiny, entitled, and worst of all, offended little brats. They all have this fantasy in their heads about our cushy lives. Our cushy lives that we just can’t stop complaining about. They say we are the overly offended generation and you know what? They’re right. I am offended.
I am offended that the generations before me got lazy. I am offended that they felt women’s rights ended with the right to vote and God forbid the right to make decisions regarding their own bodies, all the while sweeping wage inequality under the rug for decades.
I am offended that they thought the civil rights movement ended when we stopped having designated areas labeled “Colored”. I am offended that 99% of good police make up for the 1% that is bad, but a whole race has to deal with an asinine public perception based on dated stereotypes. I am offended that in 2016, we are still discussing something like the color of someone’s skin. I am offended that not everyone finds that completely repulsive.
I am offended that there is still a difference between a terrorist attack and a mass shooting. I am offended that we use the latter to discuss a Constitutional Amendment passed by Congress in 1791 rather than use it as a chance to better understand why people abuse that right today and how we can make it better. I am offended that we’re “crazy” and they’re “evil”. I am offended that “our” God loves guns, but “their” God is scary.
I am offended that gay marriage took this long to be legal. For all these years, while the sanctity of marriage was abused by multiple divorces and spontaneous Las Vegas nuptials, we decided somewhere that two people who loved each other had to wait a bit, because two guys holding hands was just too gross and two girls kissing would surely bring the rapture (unless of course they were “hot” and on tape). I am offended that they should “be happy now, because they got what they wanted!” I am offended that even if you consider it sin, you can’t just let it go and let people be happy. I am offended that the term “gay” is still synonymous with stupid and that being called “gay” is considered an insult.
I’m offended that you disguise rights as politics, so they can be something everyone “should keep to themselves.”
I am offended that you told us to go to college, because it was the only way to get a career job. A job that we could raise a family on and build a life from. I am offended that you call us entitled after we spend tens of thousands, sometimes hundreds of thousands on that education and end up disenchanted with our multiple jobs that barely pay for a one bedroom apartment. I am offended that your years of wisdom can’t somehow grasp the concept that your High School diploma got you a paycheck that put a down payment on a house, food on the table for your whole family, a few vacations a year and a little extra to put in savings, while all our degrees have given us, is debt and a general tolerance to your pompous opinions, judgments and insults. I am offended that the time we spend earning money defines who we are as people rather than the time we spend living life.
I am offended that we just chalk your racism, your homophobia, your ignorance and your adorable pipe dreams about what our lives are actually like up to it all being “generational.” I am offended that the air we breathe, the ice that is melting and the species that are dying off “isn’t your problem”. I am offended that “it won’t affect your lifetime.” I am offended that you call us lazy while you sit back and watch us change the world that you gave up on and clean up the messes that you made. I am offended that you think we should just take it on the chin and shut up.
Yes, you are damn right I am offended and I hope to God I am just the start.
