Back when country music was at it’s best, it was always about the outlaws, right? Those who weren’t afraid to push the boundaries a little or sometimes….a lot.
Of course the other thing that we all loved about country music was how good the songwriting was. You may notice I keep speaking in past tense, that’s not to say there hasn’t been good country music as of late, but coming from someone who grew up with the genre, I have seen some parts of it develop into a “flavor of the month” style genre catering to the “safe” side of the social/political spectrum.
Thankfully out of the recently bland landscape, have emerged new artists who aren’t afraid to go against the grain. Artists like Kacey Musgraves have brought back that “Outlaw Country” sound that I remember loving and have started to push the boundaries once again with witty writing and important lyrics that at the same time don’t feel like a campaign message masked as a song.
Now that doesn’t mean all country artists with a message have to be outlaws. Take Rachel Potter for instance, her style is more a mix of cute and sassy than it is rough and tumble, but the words pack just as big a punch. That’s why I am happy to share with all of you, Rachel’s new music video for her single “Jesus and Jezebel”. It is definitely worth a listen.
