As we head into the lazy days of summer, what better way to enjoy this relaxing time than with the easy going folk rock sounds of Cereus Bright. Led by founding members Tyler Anthony and Evan Ford, the Knoxville natives have released their first full length album titled, Excuses. The album is a straight forward folk-rock release that is both easy to listen and relate to.
Cereus Bright is no doubt their own band, but there are times when you would almost bet that it was Seth or Scott Avett singing rather than Cereus Bright’s own Tyler Anthony. The band itself does fit very well into the same category as The Avett Brothers, but features just a tad bit more Americana in their sound in my opinion. Excuses starts off pretty kicky, but slows down quite a bit shortly after the midway point of the album. Cereus Bright doesn’t just stick to love and loss either, as the band even sings about the facade that is the American Dream in their aptly titled “American Dream”. They also do a good job of gripping onto emotions nicely with the track “What Do You Think?”, a beautiful low tempo ballad that happens to be my favorite off the album.
Excuses is another one of those albums that can be easily enjoyed by just about anyone. If you are a fan of the folk rock and folk pop sort of scene though, you will especially love Excuses. For a first effort, these guys fit into the scene very nicely.
