The world of dance pop is full of talented, energetic artists, so it take a lot to stand out in the crowd. Southern California’s own, Astraea just so happens to have that edge that does just that. I recently had a quick Q&A with the “Dirty Blonde” songstress, here’s how it went.
First off, tell us a little about yourself. You grew up in Southern California right?
Yea baby! Born and raised in San Diego!
Since the release of “Dirty Blonde” in 2011, we’ve seen some changes including a new website and an ever evolving sound. What has brought about that change over the last two years?
I feel like the places I’ve gone, the hardships..what I’ve lost, what I’ve gained…new friendships I’ve gained and experiences, good and bad, have reflected on my writing and the way I present myself.
You seem to be influenced by so many different forms of art (fashion, dance, etc.). Who in particular have been your biggest inspirations artistically from all different mediums?
There isn’t anything specific but I am influenced by fashion, music, painting, design, photography, astrology, mysticism, imagery… the list goes on! Andy Warhol, Brigitte Bardot, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, C. S Lewis, Ghandi and so many more!
I’ve heard that you are pretty into health and fitness as well. What kinds of things do you do to stay healthy and how much does being fit mean to you as a performer?
I love to run, cardio ballet, hike and practice yoga! Working out is a release I need to maintain my sanity. I eat pretty healthy being a pescetarian! I like to eat clean and gravitate towards my Mediterranean roots. I try to mix up workouts and keep it interesting!
With dance pop always being popular and even more so as of late, how do you make yourself stand out among the rest?
It’s hard to stand apart, but I feel that through honest expression it will translate to the public as unique.
You’ve always been a big supporter of the LGBT community. It seems that more and more we are seeing artists show their support, even in genres that haven’t traditionally embraced it in the past (Macklemore – Hip Hop, Kacey Musgraves – Country). Although we still have a long way to go, how nice is it for an artist like you to see this happen?
Yes! It’s a beautiful thing! I am a huge advocate if equality, especially when it comes to partnership and love. I show my support because we are all one.
There are some teasers up on your site, one for a music video and then a few 90 second song clips as well. What can fans expect in the way of releases in the near future?
They can expect upbeat dance tracks but also… the more sensitive introverted side of me. I’m always trying to push boundaries.
It looks like you put on quite the party playing live, where might we be able to catch you performing soon?
*Laughs* Well, that comes naturally when you love what you do! Yes, I have some shows lined up. I’ll be sure to let everyone know!
