We do not cover a lot of electronic dance music because most of it is so repetitive and generally sounds the same. In some cases, it is just a remix or a cover of another song, but occasionally an original track will spark an interest. And Chicago duo, Win and Woo, which is comprised of Nick Winholt and Austin Woo, have done something a little different. Their style of EDM is a pop-infused hybrid that relies heavily on melodies. While there is still a heavy influence and use of the thumping bass lines, the duo finds a keen balance between the organic and electronic as well.
Win and Woo‘s intricate use of detailed percussion also is something that sets them apart from the rest of the EDM giants. They also seem to avoid the all-to-common beat drop like Diplo and others. Introduce singer/songwriter Shaylen to the mix and you have a grooving track that is layered and seasoned with an indie vibe. The Los Angeles vocalist adds clean, yet moody, vocals with killer breaks that makes “Gold” an absolute stunner.
“We’re super excited on this record. It’s one of those songs that came together almost literally overnight,” Win and Woo stated. “We flew to LA to write with Shaylen who we had only prior talked to via Twitter and text, and we ended up writing and producing most of this in just a few hours together. It’s a really rare thing to just vibe like that right away, so we’re glad you finally get to hear it!”
Even with the speed at which “Gold” was written and produced does nothing to diminish the quality and addictive nature of the track. It lives up to its name and is a shining example of what EDM could and should be.
