In 2015 Matt Mascarenas created a solo project called Westing for a creative outlet while not on tour. Initially Westing was an acoustic solo project, but in early 2016, the Salt Lake City residence decided to express his more aggressive side after a few live performances. The result became I Haven’t Been Feeling Myself. The 5-song EP is something of a blend between Chevelle and Jimmy Eat World with a constant barrage of stinging guitar riffs, thunderous percussion and energetic bass lines. The post-grunge sound is raw and vivid.
At times it seems that the music of songs like “Skipping Beats” and the debut single, “With You,” would overpower the former Daytrader singer, but there is no tenderness or timidness at all and Mascarenas just goes for it. Interestingly enough, there is still a lot of that folk-acoustic vibe that worms its way throughout the EP. It is an interesting aural journey navigating though the musical minds of Westing.
If you are looking for something that is a little heavier, but has great balance between vocals and instrumentation, then I Haven’t Been Feeling Myself is worth checking out.
The brand new EP, I Haven’t Been Feeling Myself by Westing will be available on April 14, 2017. Pre-order the EP on BandCamp and get the first single, “With You”, now!
