The Australian singer-songwriter, Wafia, has released her latest EP, XXIX, aptly named after the 29th element, Copper. The metal is malleable and versatile, which perfectly describes the vocal styling of Wafia. While the 4-song XXIX is short, it is still a brilliant start. It’s down-tempo, contemporary R&B feel with a touch of electronica is soothing, but edgy. The whole EP is a lesson in minimalism and how it should be properly done.
The song, “Heartburn,” completely encompasses her ability to manipulate her unique and fresh sound into a dark, layered track and it is capped off by her crystal clear and brilliant vocals. It is truly a radio-ready single.
Honestly, every song on XXIX is stunning. “The Raid” is an example of the ambiance and transcendent sound that is deeply moving and still has a bit of a percussion backbone. There is also a bit of a worldly feel that shines through during the chorus.
The only downside to this EP is that it is only 4 songs, even then, I would still recommend buying XXIX as it is easily one of the top EPs in 2015.
