We heard a little bit from Missy Elliott when she showed up at the Super Bowl halftime show earlier this year with Katy Perry. Since then she proceeded to go back into the studio to start work on her seventh album, Block Party, her first since 2005’s The Cookbook. In the mean time, as the incomparable Missy Elliott continues to work on the finishing touches of her new album, she released a video for her first single, “WTF (Where They From)” featuring the ever-present, Pharrell Williams.
I love this song! No, seriously. This track transports me back to 1990s when Missy Elliott was in her prime, and even at the tender age of 44, she is still the queen of the rap game. I mean, in the first few shots of the video she literally is a dancing disco ball on the side of the road complete with over-the-top silver glitter on her lips. Come on, they have a puppet (i.e. Blackstreet in “No Diggity”) of Pharrell rapping Pharrell. Elliott has never been one to hold back on theatrics and the video for “WTF (Where They From)” is no exception.
And while it is a fun hip-hop song, it does not overtly sexualize women, which is rare. The song itself is also ridiculously catchy and heavily beat-driven, but what did you expect from Missy Elliott? It will be played at every club around the world and I can get behind that.
