Take a quick listen to Katy Perry’s brand new single, featuring Skip Marley, “Chained to the Rhythm” and you might miss some key components to the song. For instance, the first time I heard it, I was under the impression that the lyrics were directed at the music industry. Listen a little closer and you begin to realize there is an even more important politically charged message to the extremely catchy tune.
The video for “Chained to the Rhythm” features Perry and a friend at a futuristic theme park where other park goers fall into step with each other and follow blindly from one ride to another. The overall vibe is very Black Mirror. Whoever came up with the video concept absolutely nailed the feeling of the song being peppy and dance-worthy, while the underlying message is quite a bit darker.
When we go through tough political times, casual fans tend to get annoyed by songs with a political message. Often the message is: “Shut up and sing!” I have never been a fan of this rhetoric. Although songs that people can relate to are important and they will always have their place. During difficult and trying times, however, it is my opinion that artists are at their best when they use their gift to articulate what they are feeling. Whether you agree with it or not, if they get any sort of response, they have accomplished their goal.
After around three years of waiting for new music from Katy Perry, she couldn’t have come back in a better way. She’s always been a sharp one and “Chained to the Rhythm” is further proof of that.
