It’s not often that an artist slips through the cracks with me, but when they do, I usually hear about them from my friends or see them posting about them all over social media. Alison Wonderland just happened to be one of those names that has been on the tip of everyone’s tongues as of late, but besides a clip here and there, I really hadn’t given her the listen that she deserves.
Truth is, Alison Wonderland has been making killer music for nearly a decade, but given her origins from the land down under, it has taken a little while for her to seriously catch on here in North America. She did after all win Best New Artist at the Electronic Music Awards last September, despite having an established career already in other parts of the world.
Her brand new album Awake tackles the theme of mental illness, a reoccurring subject as of late and an important one at that. Alison Wonderland manages to incorporate strong lyrics into her sound which is something that I have previously been critical of with new music in this type of genre. It also helps that she has vocals that are both strong and clear rather than the currently popular breathy ethereal sound. That alone is refreshing to say the least.
The brand new music video for “Easy” is filmed in a one shot style (whether it’s good editing or actually one take, I am not sure, but the end product is brilliant) and features Wonderland dancing through the day with a storm cloud over her head. I know that I am a little later to the party than I should be with Alison Wonderland, but I am happy that I made it regardless.
