The English acoustic folk-rock trio of sisters, Emily, Jessica and Camilla Staveley-Taylor, known as The Staves, followed up their critically-acclaimed debut record, Dead & Born & Grown, with another wonderfully harmonic and haunting record, If I Was. Vocally the trio are so beautifully clear and confident with brilliant harmonies and stunning lyrics that tell a story of loneliness and broken relationships.
If I Was is a journey through the minds and emotions of the struggling artists trying to balance the lifelong goal of being successful and maintaining some sense of connection to their roots. The lead single, “Make It Holy,” musically interprets that desire to build a real relationship, but conveys the unwillingness to force it regardless of the longing. The yearning and want is real and heartfelt in every note.
The Staves have scored another brilliant album with If I Was that will go largely unnoticed by the masses and radio stations, but do not let that fool you. This is an album worth owning.
