I am not sure if the absence from social media was because Taylor Swift wanted a break or if it was part of the setup for her current single, “Look What You Made Me Do”, and forthcoming album, reputation. The single does after all feature the line, “The old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now, why? Oh…because she’s dead”.
As expected, the single, which has only been out for a week give or take, has been met with a flurry of opinions including myself and Aaron Mannari here at Lemonade. I have always been a Taylor Swift fan, while he has been less than enthusiastic about country singer turned pop superstar. The song itself was penned by Swift, as well as her “squad member”, Lena Dunham‘s beau, Jack Antonoff (Fun., The Bleachers).
I mean let’s get this out of the way, okay? If you are expecting a song from Taylor Swift that is going to be lyrically complex and thought-provoking, you are listening to the wrong girl. Swift is Top 40, her music is going to be far more catchy than it is profound. Everyone has been dissecting the song to figure out who it is about, but in my opinion? It’s about her in every way, shape and form. It’s about saying goodbye to the shy, quiet doormat that many of us tend to be in our youth. It’s a warning to those who thought they had gotten away with it (Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, etc.) and more importantly, it’s a hype song for the album. A slam dunk to get people talking and get them ear wormed at the same time.
The music video for “Look What You Made Me Do” debuted on the MTV’s Video Music Awards (the place where Swift was greeted by Kanye West‘s “Beyonce deserved this award” moment years ago) and although it has some ridiculous imagery including Swift lifting two motorcycles, it is nowhere near the train wreck that her adversary Katy Perry‘s “Swish Swish” is and her throwback to characters from old Swift music videos is actually quite creative and worked out way better than I expected it to.
As always, the haters are gonna hate…hate, hate, hate, but with all the buzz surrounding this song? Taylor Swift has already won. See the video for yourself below.
