Every day my email inbox is bombarded by hundreds of anxiety-inducing messages asking me to review a new video, a single, an EP or a full-length album. It is nearly impossible to get to every single one. But the reward of digging through all of the pretenders is when you are able to find a new band that is putting out some interesting and quirky music. Lemonade prides itself on finding these obscure and underrated bands and shedding some light on them in a review. The Austin-based quartet, Swimming With Bears, consisting of vocalist/bassist Joe Perry, guitarists Alec Conte and Jonny Boy Kerr and drummer Ryan Hannasch, have released a brand new song, “French Girls”, that is everything that you would expect from an indie rock band.
After the release of their self-titled debut EP, Swimming With Bears, the guys embarked on tours with Weezer and Panic! At The Disco before heading out on their own national headlining tour. Shortly after the conclusion of run of shows, Texans hopped back into the studio to start reworking their sound and record additional material. The result is their brand new single, “French Girls”, that is brilliantly curated. Their sound is like a mashup of Phoenix and Grouplove and infuses dueling guitars with riffs that are both stinging jagged riffs and fuzzed up growling chords.
“French Girls” from Swimming With Bears is that track that is pushing us out of winter mode and finally into some warmer spring and summer weather. It is absolutely one of those singles that should be on your summer playlists that everyone will say, “Who is this?” and it will blow their beanie-covered heads.
