St. Paul de Vence’s sophomore release, Farther Than Light, brings back their familiar pop heavy melodies and old world instrumentation with slightly peppier concert-friendly sounds on tracks like “On This Road” and “Spring.” The addition of vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Lydia Ramsey, adds more depth to the vocal harmonies to singer/songwriter Ben Doerr’s stunning voice.
While their subject matter has expanded a bit, beyond just Doerr’s grandfather’s WWII experiences, the feelings throughout the record are just as deep and heartfelt. It is not to say that Doerr neglects his roots, because “Annecy Is On Fire” is a brilliant song about the choices that have to be made in warfare.
St. Paul de Vence should not just be a local phenomenon. This band deserves more recognition for their individuality and unparalleled songwriting abilities. There is a ton of music out there, but finding something that is this exceptional is a rare and unique find.
