We have been huge fans of Sonali for years. Back in 2014 the New York-based singer/songwriter, while still a student at New York University, did an interview with us about her recently released EP, Wake Up, and after her four-year battle with Chronic Lyme Disease, we reviewed her last single, “Forever”, back in October of last year. Luckily for us, the Indian-American artist has graced us with another single with her updated, fresh sound called “Turn It Around”.
The track is an electro-pop dream. While it has elements layered with synths and keys, Sonali spins up a throwback ’80s vibe, but vocally, she is anything but retro. Her clear, unabated voice is powerful, yet tender, and is filled with hopeful optimism that resonates throughout the track.
“‘Turn It Around’ is a song about pulling yourself up from a dark place and taking charge of your life, in whatever way that applies to you,” Sonali explains. “I’m someone who is very hard on myself, and I often find myself trapped in my own mind. It’s easy to become complacent in those times, and succumb to the belief that nothing can ever change. “Turn It Around” is about realizing that that’s not true at all, and that you’re your own best hero. No state is permanent if you don’t want it to be.”
Change is hard, but Sonali has come a long way since her days at NYU. She has battled and clawed her way back and “Turn It Around” is, not only her reward for her perseverance, but it is a mantra. One that we should all feel we are capable of.
