This Wednesday I had the pleasure of checking out Smoke Season and Caught A Ghost, who are two bands from the city of Los Angeles, California. I was excited to find out the show was at Barboza, which is located in the downstairs of Neumos in Capitol Hill. Barboza is a smaller, intimate venue and is perfect for sneaking up to the front of the crowd for the perfect view. The room has a romantic vibe due to the minimization of their lighting, so it doubles as a good date spot to go to if you’re looking for things to do around Seattle.
I had checked out the opener, Caught A Ghost, on Soundcloud before the concert and am happy to say that that they sounded even better in person. The lead singer, Jesse Nolan’s voice resembled Father John Misty’s with a slight twist. Although there was a technical difficulty that occurred before their last song, the lead vocalist took that opportunity to sing a beautiful, soft ballad. At the end of their performance, they offered everyone in the crowd a copy of their music for free via a downloadable link they’d send by email. A nice way to get people listening and keep them updated.
The headliner, Smoke Season, is a sultry duo from Hollywood, California whose sound is “Electro Soul with a shot of whiskey” according to their bio. The bandmates, lead singer Gabrielle Wortman and guitarist/vocalist Jason Rosen, have an undeniable chemistry that unfolds on stage as they perform together. I would definitely recommend checking out their music on spotify/soundcloud (links below) but their sound is so much better captured in person as Gabrielle grabs the stage with her seductive dances and eye catching stage presence. This act is something that you don’t want to miss.
After the show, both of the bands hung around and introduced themselves to anyone that wanted to chat and meet them. My friend Amanda tagged along with me and we were both able to chat a bit with members of Caught A Ghost and Smoke Season, who were all sweet and inviting (and we even bought some of their merchandise). Overall, the show was one I won’t soon forget.
