When Brandon Sheer, better known by his stage name SHEARE, released his debut EP, TURBULENCE, in May of 2017, he was greeted with critical acclaim. I mean if you are looking for something that is glittery, poppy and just plain fun, then look no further than the new EP, Music For Photo Booths, by up and coming synth-pop sensation. Building upon that momentum with his last release, which is filled with his clear, falsetto vocals and gripping synth beats and catchy melodic themes, SHEARE has continued to expand and push the boundaries of synth-pop with Music For Photo Booths.
The wonderful collection of songs that grace the 5-song EP are written, produced and recorded by himself in his Brooklyn studio apartment, making the clean, tight production on Music For Photo Booths that much more impressive. The New York City-based singer/songwriter takes this isolationist style to heart writing honest, relatable lyrics and fleshing out the stories of his life experiences through his music and related projects like stop-motion videos for songs SHEARE produces.
The dance-inducing beats, at times, can cover up the truly emotive and developed lyrics, not because the songs are unbalanced, but because the catchy melodies and toe-tapping beats are so fluid and engaging everything else seems to fade to the background. We have all heard a lot of synth and electro-pop songs over the last decade. Most of it is insipid and common, but SHEARE find uniqueness and continual innovation in a genre that is plateauing.
