Lancaster, Pennsylvania-native Howard Baker, better known by the moniker Senator, has stepped out of the shadows with a stunning debut EP, Tiny Monsters. The singer-songwriter put together hard-hitting socially aware EP that is highlighted by “Breathless”. The track, like the rest of the EP, is deeply rooted in folk-rock with a bit of pop sensibility.
The deep, brooding instrumentation and melodies of “Breathless” are matched equally by Senator‘s haunting, ethereal vocals. The subject of sexual assault, which “Breathless” addresses, matches the darkness of the song’s melodic undertones. The track’s origin is a conversation that Senator had with two women who chose different paths on how they each dealt with their traumatic experiences.
While the rest of the album may not be as dark in nature, the music of Tiny Monsters is no less emotional. It is filled with soul-searching and longing. “Lost Again”, the opening track, is a perfect example. It opens with a simple, acoustic guitar riff and a clap of thunder. Building off of that with the addition of background vocals and a piano, his hushed vocals are just barely audible, but lend itself to the mood of the song.
If there is an EP or album that typifies what an outstanding indie folk-rock album should be, Tiny Monsters has it in spades. It is unique and dark with whimsical elements to keep it entertaining and fresh without being so heavy there is no replay value. He is that next indie artist that is an unknown until he is known. Well, it is time to get to know him. His name is Senator.
The debut EP, Tiny Monsters by Senator, will be available on March 10, 2017, but you can pre-order it on iTunes now! And do not forget to check out the debut single, “Breathless”, below!
