Sometimes we get a little stuck regionally when doing reviews of independent artists. Thankfully, we were introduced to Saint Aubin by another Indiana-based artist we recently featured, Joshua Powell and The Great Train Robbery. The Indiana-based trio, comprised of Trevor St. Aubin, Fredrick Miller III and Thomas Sargent, has put together a new 5-song EP, They Say You Are A Giant, that is full of blues influenced guitars with heavy alt-rock themes but it is not just an alt-rock EP. There are so many musical influences that it is hard to define any particular style and that is a good thing.
Like the title track, “They Say You Are A Giant” is filled with a jagged, shaped guitar riff and the raw, gravelly vocals of Trevor St. Aubin has hints of the Black Keys running through it, but more edgy. Saint Aubin does not hold back on their experimentation with sound distortions and it creates an interesting and some times dissonant sound that is jarring, but controlled, like on the aptly named track, “So Ugly.” The song seems to mirror the subject matter and it works.
Then on their lead track off the EP, “Coming Out For Blood,” is exactly as the band would describe it, “a soulful collision of alt rock and jazzy folk music.” There really is not a better description of Saint Aubin and their music. If you are looking for something outside of the mainstream alt-rock and folk music, then you have to listen to Saint Aubin‘s They Say You Are A Gaint.
They Say You Are A Giant by Saint Aubin will be available starting January 8, 2016. Check their website for more details.
