Over the last year, the explosion of politically-charged, civil rights and empowerment anthems have created a bevy of brilliant and emotional songs. Dominican vocalist Roxiny adds herself to the growing list of artists who are speaking out and speaking up against domestic violence and her debut single, “9 Months”, is her story of surviving an abusive, toxic relationship.
As you could imagine, the song is deeply personal and brilliantly dark. The track starts off slowly with an ominous cry, builds into an anthemic powerhouse. Roxiny toys with us vocally as she reaches the eventual breakthrough. The slightly raspy and vulnerable vocals give way to her heated, yet liberated, screams. The dark pop songstress utilizes basic drums and percussion that are layered with stinging guitar riffs and syncopated synths that rides the waves of emotions of being buried in a relationship to the rebirth at the rediscovery of herself. In addition, the video also shows 9 women of differing backgrounds to encompass and represent the millions of women and girls who face the darkness of abuse. Roxiny said on the experience of writing the single, “There was something so powerful about that number, this incubation period. When I left, his power died, and mine was reborn.”
The shear amount of will to leave this abusive relationship and the courage to share her story can never be replaced by fiction. The emotional release and the fire ignited within Roxiny is hopeful and pure. If the New York-based singer-songwriter can continue to translate her emotions from her inner turmoil into brilliant empowering singles, like “9 Months”, then her forthcoming EP, Rituals, is going to be a triumphant and intimate look into Roxiny‘s soul.
And Roxiny is putting on a benefit concert for Planned Parenthood on September 28, 2017 in Brooklyn, NY. If you are interested in going, RSVP: HERE.
