We missed out on being able to premiere Sarah Gargano‘s single, “Paper Girl”, but this time around we did not hesitate to agree to unveil her latest single, “Second Chance”. If that is not a fortuitous song title for us, I do not know what is! In any case, the up and coming 19-year old singer/songwriter from New York has stepped up with a fun, energetic indie pop song that is heartwarming and sweet.
The Oberlin College student is like any other person making their way through classes and listen to the likes of Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran, but Sarah Gargano is slightly different. She has her eyes wide open taking a chance and making music that is hip and relatable to her generation. While her influences are certainly pop-infused Top 40, her style is much more rustic and raw giving it an indie flare with a touch of folk. While the message of “Second Change” is upbeat and hopeful, the emerging songwriter’s inspiration is a touch darker.
“The song was a really hard one to write,” Sarah Gargano said. “After being severely bullied and ostracized in middle school, I became depressed and changed a lot. For the most part, I was and am extremely proud of who I’d become as a result – more empathetic, individualistic, hard-working, etc. However, I eventually realized that there were also all these pieces of myself that I lost from the trauma I experienced and that I wanted a second chance at life – at trying to trust people, at jumping into new experiences headfirst, at being able to go to parties and be part of “typical” teenage activities without feeling like contributing to society would lead to being bullied and ostracized all over again and invariably depressed for it.”
“Second Chance” is a cathartic song that tells us all that, no matter the struggles or challenges we have faced, we are entitled to start fresh and happiness with who we are. It is a deep, powerful message from a young artist that has been to the lowest of lows with mental health issues and climbed her way out.
