When we were approached by Rockport, Maine-native Alice Limoges to premiere her brand new music video for “Winter Nights”, we could not refuse. The jazzy, acoustic number is filled with brilliant tenderness that can only be written when feeling are running out of control and the only meaningful outlet is songwriting. Alice Limoges‘s abilities as a songwriter and vocalist are undeniable and “Winter Nights” is a perfect representation of all of those skills.
So, now that we know she can sing and write songs, there is always the question of whether she has the ability to perform live. The answer to that is a resounding yes! The recording of the song as a live release gives an added dimension to the track that cannot be felt or understood as a studio recording. With Alice Limoges surrounding herself with additional talented musicians (trumpeter Carey Ozmun, bassist Sean Power and drummer Francesco Catricala), the track comes off as high-class lounge act that waking up at 2AM to catch the show would not be out of the question. Then listen to the heartbreaking song with a whiskey neat, a Cuban cigar and a booth and take it all in. Actually, I suggest doing that in your living room anyway with this song and for that matter the rest of her album, The Space Between.
So, in addition to premiere of the music video, we had the opportunity to review the entirety of her latest record, The Space Between. And it will be your chance to understand our current obsession with the New York-based singer/songwriter. “Winter Nights” is a great song about the breakdown of a romantic relationship, but the album is so much more than a breakup album. It is a journal of Limoges’s personal journey and life experiences all crammed into 9 songs. One of the highlight tracks, “Save My Soul”, is about her difficult and painful battle with bipolar disorder. It is hauntingly beautiful and equally heart-wrenching.
Along with her personal tragedies, she is able to capture the pain and suffering of those who have been forced to endure more than any one person should endure. “Aleppo” was written about her friend, who is from Syria, and because of the atrocities marring the country, he and his fiancĂ©e were forced to leave home as refugees. Unfortunately, the couple was separated and were forced to refuge in separate countries. The song is a heartbreaking story about how passports can no longer cross boarders and love being ripped apart.
It is hard to express the amount of joy, pain and suffering is contained in one album, but somehow, Alice Limoges has found away to represent every emotion in The Space Between. The brilliance of this LP is not that it is technical or well produced, although that does not hurt. It is the purity of the emotions Alice Limoges is able to conjure and capture with her songwriting and storytelling.
