Seattle’s own Mike Hadreas, who goes by the stage name Perfume Genius, has released his fourth studio album, No Shape. Although Hadreas has received very positive reviews on the majority of his releases in the past, it does feel as though No Shape is the album he’s been meaning and wanting to make his whole career.
Produced by Blake Mills, who has worked with a plethora of artists including Fiona Apple and John Legend, the album lives up to its name as it is always moving and changing throughout. Both Hadreas’s haunting voice and the constant ebb and flow of the music create a hypnotizing effect that is nearly impossible to break away from. Although the debut single “Slip Away” and the mesmerizing “Braid” are certainly highlights off the album, it is a release that you’ll want to listen to from start to finish to get the full treatment.
Despite Hadreas’ success both critically and on tour, it always feels like Perfume Genius is a bit under the radar. Perhaps that is the best thing for him anyway. We are all well aware of the hipster effect and what mainstream fame can do to an artist’s fan base. With that being said, No Shape is one hundred percent Perfume Genius the way he intended to be. It will be hard to fly under the radar much longer.
No Shape by Perfume Genius is now available on iTunes and more. Check out the video for “Slip Away” below.
