Pop music sucks. Okay, let me rephrase. Most pop music sucks. Top 40 is generally a travesty filled with a repetitive hook or chorus. The verses have little to no substance and most songs use the same five tired chord progressions. The USC graduate and former member of the famous SoCal VoCals a cappella group, Payson Lewis began blazing a trail as a big voice with huge range and secured an opportunity on the now-defunct NBC’s The Sing Off. After the show ended, he was able to translate his singing ability into a few acting gigs and, of course, more opportunities in the music business.
Thankfully, someone told Payson Lewis that the pop world needed a reboot. The Philadelphia-native singer/songwriter stepped up to the challenge and delivered a stunning brand new single, “When Love Was Young”. His stylish, upbeat pop song is filled with happy-go-lucky, catchy hooks and that is then surrounded by lovely, real lyrics that actually have meaning. The infectious, toe-tapping pop sound is ridiculously energetic and playfully draws you in with fun dance beats and his eternally positive vibes that channel the best of ’80s and ’90s pop.
“This song is about the way that sometimes we can be triggered back to a happy place in our memory by an old photo, a song, a taste, a smell,” the Philly native reminisced. “Often times, these memories may not ultimately have had happy endings, sometimes it’s a relationship that ended badly, but this momentary memory is a happy one, and we go back to this place that we didn’t even realize we had been holding on to and enjoy reliving the happy times from our past.”
And it is the same thing we do with music. If anything music triggers our memories more often than any other thing. Payson Lewis, with “When Love Was Young”, tried to capture those moments and those feelings in this track.
“I’m a very nostalgic person. I try to hold on to old friends, and keep things cordial and friendly with old flames, so I identify strongly with looking back in kindness and not in anger,” Lewis said fondly. “I try very hard to let go of resentments and not to hold any grudges, it allows me to “go back” to these times in my past and enjoy them, even if just for a moment in my memory.”
Payson Lewis succeeded. “When Love Was Young” is everything you want, no, need from a pop song. It gives you depth and insight to the artist and on some level, you can relate. It is a brilliant formula that should keep the multi-talented artist busy making music.
