You never know what you’re going to get when child stars release their first “adult” album. As of late they’ve done pretty well with names like Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez dominating the airwaves, but every time a new one pops up, they’re met with a dose of skepticism.
If you have tweens in your family, you might know Olivia Holt from the Disney Network show Kicking It. The 18 year old Tennessee native has been acting since she was 10 and even recorded a handful of songs back in 2012 for the film, Girl Vs. Monster. Four years later, Holt has released her debut EP simply titled Olivia.
Olivia is straight up pop from the start and pretty much what you would expect from a former Disney star, but that’s not necessarily a criticism. After all, the formula has worked with the artists mentioned above. The EP is actually pretty solid as far as debuts go. With that said, when you take a closer listen there is of course room for improvement. For instance, the melodies are very similar to what you would possibly hear on a Selena Gomez album and so is the subject material. Also, the multitude of effects used on her voice are unnecessary as Holt has a good voice without them. She’s at her best with the track “Thin Air” (f/ Jordan Fisher) as it is a departure from the status quo and is still a really catchy pop track.
Like I said, this debut is solid. Olivia Holt is still very young and trying to find herself out a bit and she definitely didn’t go wrong by any stretch. I certainly look forward to what she can do in the future. Hopefully whoever she’s working with will understand that her natural talents are worth a hell of a lot more than an audio effect.
