Los Angeles-based Nico Vega’s aptly named sophomore album, Lead To Light, rocks with the best of the best. “I Believe (Get Over Yourself),” which was co-written by Dan Reynolds (of Imagine Dragons), provides that early spark to the album with a heavy, memorable hook and brilliantly constructed melodies draw us in without warning forcing us to nod along on the first listen. Once Lead To Light has its claws in getting away from this LP is nearly impossible.
The enchanting, rasping vocals of lead singer, Aja Volkman, explode their way into the aural senses only to be enhanced by Rich Koehler’s post-grunge infused guitars and drummer Dan Epand’s high-energy percussion. There is very little time to breathe between each hard-hitting track, but craving more is inevitable.
The current fan-base for Nico Vega will still love the sound, but it is a pretty big departure from their self-title LP and any new fans that catch the band at a live show or radio will fall instantly for their catchy riffs. Expect big things from Nico Vega in 2014 and going forward.
