A little while ago I was fortunate enough to get to chat with a new band that goes by the name of The New Tarot. Fronted by sisters Monika and Karen Walker, the band provides listeners with a unique mashup of indie rock, pop and a decent dose of grunge. Normally bands who try and incorporate the latter sound that shaped the 90’s come across hacks at best. This is simply not the case with The New Tarot.
Although the EP can be very eccentric and at times even a bit abstract, it never comes across as pretentious. In fact if anything, the best word to describe the EP from start to finish is “captivating”. Monika Walker’s voice is a wonderful mixture of strength, attitude and clarity, while sister, Karen backs her up and even takes her turn at the lead during the title track “God of Science”. There is certainly no lack of talent between the two of them.
God of Science is a little bit of everything. It has throwback sounds to the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, yet it sounds like something from the future in others. They’re edgy, they’re hip and best of all The New Tarot doesn’t hold back. The writing comes across as both original and genuine and really, what more could you ask for?
