Irish pop group, New Portals, released an intriguing EP, Stereo, that encompasses, of course, pop, but also blends in synth, dance and a sensible 80s throwback vibes. The wife and husband duo of Ruth and Mike Aicken have put together one of the most engaging and catchy EPs so far this year. The New Portals sound that is so enticing follows in the footsteps of artists like LIGHTS and CHVRCHES, but do not misunderstand, they are blazing their own trail.
The title track, “Stereo”, is an ear worm and it burrows its way in, never wanting to leave. The catchy dance song is sweet and charming as a song about the first throws of love. The synth samples combined with Ruth’s charming, sweet vocals makes it nearly impossible to not sing along. This track shows how in-sync the pair truly are.
“Sunshine” is a fusion of electro-pop and jazz and it is magic. “Move So Slow” and “Fill Me Up” are styled more as a dance, EDM, dubstep mixture and “Groovy Boy” is their 80s throwback track. There was a ton of thought put into Stereo because the vocals, the harmonies, the production quality and every other detail is refined and perfected.
Keep an eye on New Portals because Stereo is speaking up loud and clear saying, “We have arrived, so pay attention!”
