We might be a little late to the party for the lead single, “Sometimes” by the Brooklyn-based Mackenzie Ellis, known simply as Mothica, but we could not let it pass without saying something! The underground dark pop artist is on the verge of releasing her sophomore EP, Heavy Heart.
But ahead of its release, the singer/songwriter dropped the first single, “Sometimes”. The track is packed with raw emotions and uncertainty of starting a new relationship in the digital age of instant gratification.
The Oklahoma-native muses about the track stating, “I wrote ‘Sometimes’ after experiencing the confusion of dating someone in this current age of constant stimulation. It’s the product of everything feeling up in the air when starting a new relationship; the uncertainty of someone else’s intentions, and emotional availability. It’s hard to trust your gut when your heart is being mislead. Nobody likes to feel like their time is being wasted.”
Mothica‘s sincere, haunting vocals highlights the track that is filled with a deep, thumping bass and honest lyrics. Overall the “Sometimes” is somber and restrained showing off her ability to balance and layer the track to give it depth. This teaser is the first indication of greater things to come on her forthcoming Heavy Heart.
