If you have heard Maren Morris‘s popular single, “My Church”, you would know that although she is certainly country at heart, she has a voice and style that fits in with pop radio as well. In fact Morris isn’t just pop friendly, she’s actually what pop radio needs. A break from overly produced dance beats and repeated hooks. Maren Morris is good music in one of it’s purest and most exciting forms.
Ever since hearing the line “When Hank leads the sermon and Cash leads the choir/it gets my cold cold heart burning/hotter than a ring of fire” from “My Church”, I was completely hooked on Maren Morris. The single was more than just a catchy song, it was a reminder of how spiritual connections can be made well outside of walls and a congregation. For those of you who truly love music, you know exactly what I mean.
When Maren Morris‘ debut studio album, Hero, was released, I couldn’t wait to take a listen and I was certainly not disappointed. Hero may actually be one the best written albums of 2016 so far.
Tracks like “Drunk Girls Don’t Cry”, “Rich” and “Just Another Thing” will get you dancing. While “I Wish I Was” and “I Could Use a Love Song” will get you feeling. For those who love a good anthem, there’s the second to last song, “Second Wind.”
But the most powerful and downright amazing offering comes in the form of the finale with “Once”. The track features a simple, yet hard hitting beat mixed with Morris‘s emotion soaked vocals. A combination that tears you apart in the way that good music should. If Hero is my favorite album of 2016 so far, “Once” could very well be my favorite song.
Besides my own minor pet peeve of cigarette references in music, I honestly have nothing bad to say about Hero. This album is outstanding.
