As if announcing that you were supporting a couple up and coming acts like U2 and Tom Petty wasn’t enough for The Lumineers in 2017, the band has also released a companion film to their latest album, Cleopatra. For those of you familiar with the album, you already know that the story of Cleopatra was suited perfectly for this sort of treatment.
Without giving too much away, “The Ballad of Cleopatra” includes several tracks from the album including the popular single “Ophelia”, “Sleep on the Floor”, “Angela” and of course “Cleopatra”. As the film progresses you start to see the protagonist at different times in her life or I suppose – depending on how you perceive it – you could even make the argument that the characters are different incarnations of the spirit of Cleopatra all following a similar path and reminiscing of what might have been.
The film is beautifully done and the cameos from the band are both tasteful and creative. It manages to be artful while staying true to the tale, never wandering into the abstract. Just like I fell in love with the storytelling on the album, I am completely delighted with how The Lumineers brought Cleopatra to life. Hats off.
