The Wave will be the third studio album for Nashville quintet Los Colognes. And if you are looking for something that is a bit of a throwback to the 1980s pop with a tinge of country and rock and roll in the mould of Glenn Frey and Don Henley, then this is the album. It is like driving down the Carolina coast with the feeling of a warm breeze flowing while inhaling the salty sea air. It is refreshing to say the least.
While, the tracks are somewhat upbeat in tone, the overall feeling is subdued and can be perfectly summed up in the lyrics for “Forever In Between” when guitarist/singer Jay Rutherford croons, “Close your eyes/For life is but a dream/Roll on forever/Forever in between”. There is that inevitability of not really fitting in and being stuck in the middle.
The Wave is symphonic and grandiose without being pretentious and unapproachable. When Rutherford’s calming voice is matched with the solid, consistency of drummer Aaron Mortenson and layered over the gentle bass of Gordon Persha and the keys of Micah Hulscher and Chuck Foster, the result is a perfectly tempered sound that transcends the genre of rock. It comes across in ever single one of the 10 tracks. It is a smooth and inviting album built around a solid group of musicians playing for each other. Tracks like “Flying Apart”, the aforementioned “Forever In Between” and “Unspoken” are radio-ready.
The guys from Nashville have found their niche and tackling it without hesitation. It is a beautiful album made with attention to detail and care. Los Colognes have put together a ridiculous chill, rock album in The Wave with immense replay value.
