When I was 16 years old, I was running around playing a lot of sports and messing around with my friends. Thankfully I have come a long way since then, but I still feel a little under accomplished when I see professional music videos from teenagers. That includes the 16-yr old singer/songwriter Kylie Spence. The debut single, “Lying Eyes”, from the Los Angeles-based artist is a revelation. The song is a dark, haunting alt-pop track that follows a broken relationship and the video that accompanies reflects the visual representation of the mood and desolation of Kylie Spence‘s inner turmoil.
The scene is set in the arid California desert that gives the feeling that the love has lost any potential for growth. It is a perfect representation of and, at only 16, Kylie Spence does reflect the spirit of an old soul. The Laguna Beach native ends up creating a unique sound that is modern, but harasses the senses with a slight retro feel by using vintage instruments like a mellotron, wurlitzer and harmonium. There is depth and richness to her mature vocals that is far beyond her age.
The music is beautifully written. The visual component is stellar and her tender, rangy vocals would make any singer envious. Having dealt with respiratory health issues in her formative years, which prevented her from singing, Kylie Spence took that time to refine her songwriting that will only continue to develop into a complete artist. With her debut EP on the horizon in 2018, there is an expectation of her continued climb toward stardom and “Lying Eyes” is a heck of a first step toward that goal.
