When Los Angeles-based R&B singer/songwriter Kyan Palmer decided to step away from his desk job at Republic Records in the Universal Music Group building, he was taking a significant risk. His debut single, “Burn Mona Lisa”, took off and garnered more than 3 million spins on Spotify. The Arizona-raised artist recently released his debut EP, also named Burn Mona Lisa, late in September and is filled with followed it up with the brand new music video for the title track.
The single is a down-tempo heart-breaker, that utilizes Kyan Palmer‘s smooth, sensual vocals to convey his emotional distress as he fights to break free from an unhealthy or broken relationship that is finally over. Photographs of the former couple are displayed everywhere, but behind the smiles and happy exteriors, you can see the anguish during the times between the shots. There is a falseness to the photos and to exorcise the darkness hidden off frame, Kyan Palmer, literally, burns the memories away.
“Burn Mona Lisa” is an engaging and brooding R&B ballad that lovingly intertwines subtle melodies and modern synth production. It is a beautifully written track that deserves attention, as does its visual counterpart. If you are interested in recapturing some of the magic that brought 1990s R&B to limelight, then Kyan Palmer is the man to help you rekindle the flame.
