Khalid, a 19-yr old El Paso-native, released his debut album, American Teen, with the hopes and dreams of a generation of soul, R&B artists riding on his coattails. Imagine for a moment if a young Al Green was transported from the 1960s to present day and was asked to make music. There is a fairly good chance that it would turn out similar to American Teen.
The slight gravel, yet tender, vocals of Khalid flow so easily that it is hard not to get lost in the moment and sway and head bob. What is interesting is his ability to take his soulful, raw voice and mash it up with synth samples on tracks like “Young Dumb & Broke” and “Keep Me”, and still drop back into a piano ballad on “Angel” without any issues. It is an interesting attribute that shows the singer-songwriter’s true versatility.
If you are looking for something a little different or just have a soft spot for soul music with an updated twist, then pick up American Teen by Khalid. He is an up and coming young artists in a genre that is in need of some new blood.
