If there was a visual metaphor for a person’s attempt to escape the grasp of anxiety, “The Lighthouse” by singer/songwriter Julie Elody might be the best representation to date. The New Orleans, LA artist takes the best of her rock-inspired roots and has translated her life experiences into a comprehensive electro-pop song that exudes hope and determination. With “The Lighthouse”, the new single is packed with synth beats and funky, ethereal melodic themes that encroach on trap music and yet complement the Julie Elody‘s distinctive, powerful vocals.
“I think we all have moments where we feel unhinged and “The Lighthouse” is a song about being okay with being a little broken,” Julie Elody explained. “My favorite line from the song is “there’s a lighthouse in this room I watched it go dark. But there are matches everywhere what distracting spark.” Even when everything feels like it’s falling apart, there’s always another way. It may not be the healthiest thing to do, but we do what we need to do to survive and sometimes that’s enough.”
And while a lot of times alt-pop, and pop in general, lacks in the lyrical department, the NOLA resident is full of visual, poetic lyrics that compete with some of the best songwriters. What is even more engaging is that Julie Elody has found that beautiful strain of material that everyday people can relate to. She writes about her struggles with anxieties, addiction and life’s general issues. It is the light of hope and the exquisite delivery of her elegiac lyrics that sets her apart from the rest and “The Lighthouse” is a brilliant example.
