It has been over three years since the Oscar-winning musician released Love in the Future, but John Legend finally dropped his fifth studio album, Darkness and Light, and it is everything we hoped it would be. The silky smooth, jazzy singer-songwriter delivers with brilliantly written, self-reflecting tracks (“I Know Better”), wonderful collaborations (Chance The Rapper, Miguel and Brittany Howard), his signature love songs (“Love Me Now” and “Surefire”).
The ten-time Grammy Award winner will more than likely add to that total in 2018 when Darkness and Light is eligible for nominations. The interesting part is that, while this album is definitely John Legend, the Ohio-native continues to evolve continually adding more depth and layers to his songs. It is a signature of all brilliant musicians and Legend is, pardon the pun, is living up to his own.
One of the most heartfelt songs, not shockingly, is “Right By You (for Luna)”. He is not the first artist to write a song for a child, but there is something extra here. There is emotion and sincerity. Sometimes there are songs that are written for children, but can occasionally feel too commercial. That is not the case with “Right By You (for Luna)”.
There seems to be only one minor misstep on “Same Old Story”. Track unnecessarily distorts Legend‘s rich vocals toward the end and pretty much ruins it. Maybe it is a little bit of nitpicking, but auto-tuning seems to destroy the mood, feels unnecessary and does not really fit with the rest of the album. If we want a brilliant voice auto-tuned, we would go pick up a T-Pain album.
In any case, while “Same Old Story” has a small blemish, Darkness and Light is an album full of outstanding tracks. Here is to another season of John Legend winning Grammys.
