Earlier this year we reviewed a single called “Molly” from singer/songwriter Jess Abran and multi-talented artist Stephen Voyce. Well, the duo is back with another collaboration with the assistance of guitarist Malcolm Sargent called “Sour Cherry”. The second single off the upcoming EP, First Born Last, is an acoustic guitar driven track that incorporates the sensual, honey-smoked vocals of Abran and Voyce’s gravelly, soulful crooning into genre blurring single.
The flowing and ethereal feel that permeates “Sour Cherry’ from start to finish sets this track apart from the standard pop song. The juicy, soul-infused vocals meshed with the classic R&B acoustic guitar riffs give the cut a twist that draws out the undeniable chemistry between all three artists. The Montreal duo continues to build upon their jazz and pop influences as well. It truly is an impossible task to categorize a song like “Sour Cherry” so we will not even try.
As Voyce croons, “I’m satisfied” and it is hard to dispute this claim as “Sour Cherry” is a dark, heartbreaking track, it is sexy and a bit taboo, but sometimes that is the best way.
