It is a difficult thing to do a solo project, well, EDM/pop singer/songwriter Jen Janet, best known as the vocalist and keyboardist for Blind Revision, has done just that with her debut EP, Dangerous. After releasing new music with Blind Revision, a mainly alternative rock band, she decided to step out and create EDM-based songs that are pop heavy and catchy.
Her writing style, at times can feel a little forced on the dance tracks, but it is still pretty good for her first solo foray. Janet, speaking about writing lyrics, stated, “I end up writing a lot of my lyrics in the shower. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because you’re alone with your thoughts in a relaxing environment, but it can be pretty inconvenient. For instance, I’ll have an idea pop into my head and I won’t want to lose it, so I’ll jump out, throw a towel on, and run to grab a notebook. The trick is not to get the paper wet.”
While the title track, “Dangerous”, feels a little disjointed, “Can’t Breathe” is executed wonderfully. The track is filled with solid, addictive beats, as expected, but does not overpower her clear, enchanting vocals. The song also gives the Providence, Rhode Island-native a chance to show her versatility a little more. While 3 of the 4 songs on Dangerous are pop, club-hopping tunes, the final track, “In Bloom”, is a heart-wrenching piano ballad with poetic lyrics that showcase her tender, emotive vocals.
While the production is not quite as polished as Selena Gomez or Bebe Rexha, Jen Janet shows a lot of promise as a solo EDM/pop artist. She is ascending and now would be the time to hop on the early bandwagon.
