There is something special about music that tells a story. And English singer-songwriter James Walker has some stories to tell. On his upcoming debut album, English Bones, the Reading native lets us into his world and how they have changed after a year-long battle with a rare heart condition that ended with surgery and rehabilitation.
The fierce nature of James Walker to continue to fight through this illness created a determination that brought to life his desires to connect with others on an emotional level. His emotional language is songwriting. The ability to create thought provoking and emotional tracks, like “Weathered”, which focuses on his personal relationship with a former lover who, after a difficult breakup, meet again months later. After reconnecting, they realize that there is no love remaining and that their growth has lead their lives in different directions.
When talking about the inspiration of the track, James Walker states, “When we met back up, it was like our souls had shifted. I couldn’t see in him what I felt attracted to in the first place. His laugh sounded different, the colour of his hair seemed off.” And that realization turned into a deep soul-searching track that is infinitely relatable.
The track itself starts with a slow quiet build up, then drops in with James Walker‘s gentle, tender vocal that rises and falls like the ocean tide. It is beautifully sweet and controlled, but not sterile. He finds a way to draw every drop of emotion he felt during his meeting with his former flame and translate it into a gut-wrenching and heartbreaking song. It is outstanding.
If this is what the rest of English Bones has in store, then it is going to be an emotional roller coaster.
