Just in time for Halloween, Ice Nine Kills has released their brand new album, The Silver Scream. I will admit, I hesitate to associate the band with something as blatant as Halloween since they are much more than a soundtrack for the holiday, but their affinity for horror is by no means a secret, so it is only fitting that they would treat their fans to new music at this time of year.
It is kind of crazy to think that INK‘s original members initially set out to make punk-ska music, in fact, ska greats, Less Than Jake actually make an appearance on this album. With that said, it is a fascinating start to the band’s history, since they are one of those bands who truly does keep growing and continues to impress release after release. The Silver Scream is pure metalcore greatness. As alternative sub-genres seem to gravitate toward a more electronic/synth inspired sound, Ice Nine Kills continue to showcase pounding guitar riffs and thunderous percussion with the subtlest of synthetic garnishes. As you might expect, the band pays homage to the biggest names in horror films as well with songs like “Thank God It’s Friday” (Friday The 13th), “Stabbing In The Dark” (Halloween), “IT Is The End” (IT). Hell, they even cross over to another holiday with the track “Merry Axe-Mas” which features one of the best guitar solos on the album.
The Silver Scream is incredibly well produced and blows other metalcore releases out of the water this year. Ice Nine Kills shows off just how dynamic they can be with both their screaming and their vocals, as well as both their chunkiest guitars and crystal clear solos. Sure, The Silver Scream may have been released at the perfect time of the year, but make no mistake this album is meant to be enjoyed year around for years to come.
