HOLDN, formerly known as Gina Petro, decided to trade in her alt-rock membership for something a little darker and moodier. The former alternative lead singer of In Our Glory has step into the world of dark pop with her debut single, “BURN”. There is a bit of her rock background present in her clean, yet slightly raspy voice and when combined with the ambient beats and R&B feel, the result is a lyric and vocally drive track that is catchy and engaging.
Regarding the deeply personal track, she states:
“‘BURN’ was and always will be one of the most special songs I have ever written. I had over 100 demos that I needed to sift through to narrow it down to the first song I would release to this world. During that process, my grandparents came over for a visit one afternoon that I was sitting in my basement sifting through demos.
I invited my pop-pop downstairs to listen to some of the demos I had set aside for myself to listen to that day and after going through a few of the demos, ‘BURN’ came up. He stopped me from changing it and told me how much he loved it and made me play it again. Just a few short months later, my pop-pop unfortunately passed away. ‘BURN’ is about someone walking out of my life without warning and that person staying within close enough proximity to watch me struggle to stand back up while they continue on as if my pain was non-existent.”
The New York City singer-songwriter is completely opening up herself emotionally to the world in a sensual and honest way. If “BURN” is any indication of what HOLDN‘s capabilities are as a dark-pop artist, the future is boundless. It is going to be a crazy ride and thankfully we are already on-board.
