In 2017, the Los Angeles-based Highland Kites blew me away with their I’m Not Weak EP. So much so that the band earned my 2017 favorite band/duo award. Well, the up and coming indie act returns with a brand new single, “I Didn’t Belong” to kick off the new year.
The new track, which is still distinctly Highland Kites, is a departure from their previous works on the aforementioned EP. While Marissa Lamar dives in with her wonderfully gravelly heart-wrenching vocals, musically the track is ethereal and, in a way, unrestrained.
“I Didn’t Belong” does what all Highland Kites songs do. They incite an emotional response with creative, poetic lyrics that are hauntingly dark and layered with raw talent. It is nearly impossible to tear yourself away from the captivating soundscape that encapsulates the mind with Lamar’s bold and gritty voice. Before even realizing it, the track has been on repeat for 30 minutes and there is a compulsion to keep the song spinning.
The single is a wonderfully developed song does not need a review. My words could never describe the pain and anguish that courses through “I Didn’t Belong”. You will just have to listen for yourself. And I suggest that you listen to it on repeat.
