It has been an interesting year for the formerly Los Angeles-based Highland Kites. After the release of their brilliant EP, I’m Not Weak, in July of 2017, the duo of singer-songwriter Marissa Lamar and drummer Neil Briggs have been preparing to change it up, not only musically but physically.
Needing a change, the pair left the LA music scene decided to make the jump to another music hot spot: Nashville, Tennessee (with a short layover in Florida). It was perfect timing to explore the nuances of their style. Instead of the standard studio work, Highland Kites decided to go more rustic by recording and producing their latest single, “Better Off”, and their song off of the upcoming album, in bedrooms.
“We love working in the studio, but wanted to challenge ourselves and see what we could create taking a totally different approach to our music,” Highlands Kites revealed. “This just felt like the right away to portray these songs.”
Luckily, they gave us a preview of their new sound and song. While the track is still decidedly Highland Kites, the newly relocated band’s aural sensibility is rawer and filled deeper emotional connections that listeners will relate to.
“‘Better Off’ is a song about healing, letting go of toxic relationships that I once felt defined me,” said vocalist Marissa Lamar. “It’s about moving through the heartbreak of not having lived up to someone’s expectations, and finding myself in the healing process.”
It does not get any more real than that. Amazingly, “Better Off”, is just the tip of the iceberg for grassroots style. It is expected that the full album, as yet untitled, to be released some time in 2019 after the band has been fully settled in their new Nashville location. But do not worry, Highland Kites will be releasing other singles throughout the year leading up to the new album.
