There is a lot of documentation out there that will confirm that I am a huge fan of Evanescence. My obsession with the band started back in 2000 with the Origin album. Ever since, I have followed the career path of lead singer Amy Lee. While, the later albums of Evanescence may have been over-hyped because of the extend time between releases, the production, artistry and talent of the singer/songwriter was never in question.
A new era is on the horizon for Evanescence. After a long and difficult lawsuit against their former label, Wind-Up Records, the band announced that they were now independent and went on a hiatus that would see Lee set off on a series of solo projects that included a children’s album and scoring the soundtrack for a movie. Now, fortunately, they have finally announced their fourth studio album, Synthesis. From what the reports are saying, Evanescence is attempting to blur the line between the orchestral/classical and the electronic/rock sides. The first indication of this potentially epic shift in musical philosophy is their new single, “Imperfection”.
It is distinctly Evanescence, so do not feel like they are going to pull a Red Hot Chili Peppers move. But the song does feel a bit more grandiose. Maybe that is the live orchestra playing or maybe it is the heavenly, powerhouse vocals of Amy Lee. In any case, the song is littered with her trademark piano themes and an industrial and electronic beats that is laid over top of a bevy of strings and percussion.
Maybe this is just my bias toward a band that I have loved for almost 20 years, but I do find comfort in the familiar sound of Evanescence, but it just sound grander and more ambitious. Here is hoping that Synthesis is worth the wait.
You can pre-order Synthesis by Evanescence on iTunes now, but the album is scheduled for release on November 10, 2017. In the mean time, check out the new single, “Imperfection”, on Spotify below!
