When we reviewed “You’d Know Today” by El Mar, we knew we were on to something special. The single from the Brooklyn-based Joey Primero was filled with southern/alternative rock themes and generously sprinkled with that wonderful, soft country twang that reminded us of the days of Melissa Etheridge and Sheryl Crow. Now, the singer/songwriter is back with a new single in her signature sound, self-described as “mystical mermaid rock”, called “New Life”.
This upbeat, breakup song is one of those cuts that will getting you moving after wanting to curl up and die in a corner. Heartbreak is no joke, but moving on is one of the most cathartic feelings. And El Mar has taken that emotion and built a wonderful, energetic track filled with hope. “New Life” succeeds beautifully.
The crunchy, rock-inspired vocals of El Mar, that has vestiges of 4 Non Blondes‘s lead singer Linda Perry but with with clearer, cleaning sound, and the stinging bluesy guitar riffs, “New Life” could be the renaissance of female-driven rock bands.
“New Life” is the latest single off El Mar‘s upcoming EP, Walking With Dogs, that was completely recorded in two days at Brooklyn. And if this song is any indication of the quality of the EP, then we are ridiculously excited to see more from the former PR rep turned full-time musician!
