We love Canadians. I mean, my business partner and editor, Brandon, is half Canuck. Honestly, he is probably in Canada more often than he is in his hometown. Sorry, I am a little off topic. So on that note, I would like to present to you a rising star: Toronto’s own DYLYN. The alt-pop singer-songwriter dropped three singles in 2017 and each one was a standout that rode the edge between indie-pop and mainstream Top 40.
And her newest release, “Wolf”, is a dark, catchy representation of DYLYN‘s dedication to her craft as an artist and songwriter. The depth and anger of her songwriting on the gritty, rebellious single is a cathartic release of her devil-may-care attitude after difficult life events.
“It helped pinpoint exactly how I was feeling,” DYLYN explains. “Through the breakups, family breakups, the ups and downs – I was able to release songs chronologically synced to the stages of my emotions. The new track “Wolf” is a direct reflection of how I felt about men post-breakup. You become reckless, rebellious and ultimately don’t give a shit about other people’s feelings.”
“Wolf” is, as DYLYN puts it, part of “a therapy session dedicated to the last three years”. Her angst and general malcontent helped her develop the song by adding heavy punk-infused percussion, then blending it with dark 80s synth beats and her growling, deep vocals.
The stellar production adds a layer of complexity to the throwback feel that drives the track forward. It is a complete and relatable song that should be on everyone’s playlist.
And do not forget to look for her upcoming debut album, Sauvignon and a Kimono, due out on February 23, 2018.
