In an industry that is usually dominated by males, Kate Ellwanger, better known by her tag DOT, is everything the electronic music world needs. She is a producer, vocalist, composer and a founder of a female-centered record label, Unspeakable Records. At the tender at of 23, the Olympia, Washington native is finally stepping out in to the spotlight with her first LP, Retrofuture. The multi-talented musician’s debut is an 11-track down-tempo, soulful album filled with tender, ethereal vocals and harmonies meshed with acoustic, organic instruments and haunting synth samples. DOT‘s ability to blend the analog and digital is flawless and mesmerizing.
The Los Angeles-based producer is an original and pushes the limits of electronic music. One of the first singles, “Gravity”, is filled with classic synthetic hooks that are re-imagined into an undeniably unique framework with an underlying acoustic guitar riff that enhances DOT‘s already sensual vocals. It is easy to get lost in this track and want to put it on repeat, but push through because the rest of the aptly named LP, Retrofuture, does not disappoint.
Tracks like “Amnesia” and “No Filter” are boundless and indicative of the whole album as it boasts such a modern feel throughout. The soulful pop influences blended with a touch of retro sensibility makes the album eternal. Retrofuture is the kind of album that could have been released anytime in the last 40 years and it would not be out of place. It is both fresh and vibrant.
Over the years, the knock on electronic music was that it took no musical talent to hit play. While this can be true in a lot of cases, DOT defies that notion as Retrofuture is as engaging as it is thoughtful.
Retrofuture by DOT will be available on May 12, 2017, but you can pre-order the LP on iTunes now! Check out her latest single, “Gravity”, on SoundCloud below.
