These days you never know what you’re going to get on an EP. You might get two awesome songs and a couple remixes or four mediocre songs, heck, sometimes you barely get one whole song! That, however, is not the case for Distant Cousins. Their self-titled EP features six, that’s right, SIX songs. None of which could be described using the word “mediocre.”
Joining the tradition of bands like Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and The Lumineers, Distant Cousins provides listeners with upbeat indie pop that will delight even the most boring of personalities. Their sound is both simple and complex and in the best way possible. Whether they are including relatively exotic instruments, xylophone and a cowbell to name a couple, infusing a little bit of rock or a little bit of country into their tracks, Distant Cousins does it correctly by knowing just how much is enough.
Standout tracks include the first song off the Distant Cousins EP, “Taste of Tomorrow”, as well as the second track, “Your Story”, which features Alternative Americana vocalist Jessie Payo. The overall upbeat EP ends on a much calmer note with it’s only ballad, “For a Moment”, providing a peaceful finale to a solid effort. This is definitely an EP worth checking out.
